Artist Statement

“In Yahualica, Jalisco, Mexico, there is a house up along a steep uphill street that my grandfather designed and helped construct years ago. There, he and my grandmother would raise a family of four daughters and one son, who would all eventually go their separate ways. Some of the children would end up across town, others would end up across the U.S./Mexico border, including my father. However, despite the distance between the growing families, the connection between us never disintegrated. Thanks to the presence of my grandparents and the home they created years ago, my family has an unspoken understanding that their home is known as our family’s welcomed community space.

With these stories in mind, I take inspiration from Sohrab Kashani and Jon Rubin’s collaborative work, titled “The Other Apartment” (2019-2020) to recreate the serenity of my grandparent’s house. Through the recreation of this familiar environment, I am inviting the audience to project their comforting memories with community onto the artist space. Even with the unusual but oddly comfortable furniture, atypical photographs in homey styled frames, and uncommon home décor displayed on the walls, viewers are encouraged to think on their own experiences. This goal is inspired by the artist Do Ho Suh’s work and themes, as the setting and pieces within it are meant to bring out the emotional and nostalgic feelings many of us forget about as time passes.”
